Common

Conditions

Whether you’re dealing with a common concern or a more complex skin condition, we provide personalised care and effective treatment options. Below is an overview of some of the most common skin conditions we treat in the practice.

Acne

Acne is a common condition that affects both adolescents and adults, often impacting self-esteem and social interactions. Whether you are dealing with persistent pimples or troubling acne scars a range of treatments including medicated creams, oral medications and chemical peels can be offered. With the right skincare regime and targeted treatment, clear skin is within reach.

ECZEMA

Atopic dermatitis, commonly known as eczema, is characterised by an itchy, recurring rash that affects people of all ages. Untreated eczema may have a negative effect on one’s quality of life including school or work performance, engagement in sport and exercise, enjoyment of social interactions and sleep disturbances. Eczema may be associated with other atopic conditions such as allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis and asthma. Successful management of eczema requires a holistic approach including managing triggers, general skin care routines and medical treatments.

ACTINIC KERATOSES AND SKIN CANCER

Actinic keratoses are scaly lesions that appear on sun-exposed skin and have the potential to develop into skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma. Regular skin checks are crucial for early detection and treatment of these and other skin cancers, such as basal cell carcinoma.
Early intervention is important to ensure that any concerning lesions are quickly and effectively treated.

Moles

Common moles are also known as melanocytic nevi. They commonly increase in number over the first three decades of life and with sun exposure.
Melanoma is a severe and potentially dangerous form of skin cancer. An increased number of moles is a risk factor for melanoma, furthermore, melanoma may arise within a pre-existing mole.

THE ABCDE RULE IS USED TO POTENTIALLY SPOT A MELANOMA:

ASYMMETRY

One half of the mole does not match the other.

BORDER

The edges are mostly irregular.

COLOUR

Color variation within the mole.

DIAMETER

The lesion is larger than 6mm.

EVOLVING

The mole is changing in colour, shape or size.

Regular mole checks are advised especially if you have a family history of melanoma or noticed any one of the above changes in a skin lesion.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic condition that occurs in genetically predisposed individuals who are exposed to environmental triggers such as stress, medications and infections. It can be a debilitating disease that affects skin, nails and joints. There are many types of treatments available such as creams, phototherapy and medications. There are many new targeted therapies/biologics that treat psoriasis offering patients a greatly improved quality of life.

Alopecia

Alopecia is the dermatological term for hair loss. There are many different types of hair loss such as alopecia areata, telogen effluvium, and androgenic alopecia, and treatment depends on the cause. There are a variety of treatment options available.

PREGNANCY-RELATED SKIN CONDITIONS

During pregnancy, a woman’s skin often undergoes various changes due to the influx of hormones. These may include hyperpigmentation (Melasma), oily or dry skin, stretchmarks (striae gravidarum) and increased hair growth (hirsutism). Pregnancy may also influence preexisting skin conditions such as acne, eczema and psoriasis. There are also pregnancy-specific skin conditions that may present with severe itch and different types of skin lesions from small bumps (papules) to urticarial plaques or blisters.

While pregnancy is a beautiful time, mothers-to-be are often left feeling not themselves because of these skin conditions. With the right attention, we can address these skin concerns with pregnancy-safe treatment options.
